For those who have read the short story "Head and Shoulders" by F. Scott Fitzgerald?

At the end of the story, why does Horace seem dissatisfied with the way things turned out? He had a beautiful wife who had become a successful novelist, and he himself became successful by performing in gymnastic stunts. Why then, does he tell the Frenchman that it is a bad idea to answer the door when life knocks?
